I found several more intriguing clues.

An article published on the front page of the Davenport Daily Times on 20 Nov. 1926 begins:

"Wendell Webb and Binford Arney, Cornell college students, have ended their search for Miss Myrle Sizer, missing Maquoketa school teacher, as a result of receiving letters threatening their lives.

"The two students, it was disclosed, received unsigned warning notes by mail and also were warned by a mysterious telephone call. Although they considered the letters a joke, they dropped their private search at the suggestion of President Harlan Updergraff of the college.

"Tangible clues are said to have been found by the young men but the details have not been revealed by either."

Wendell Webb became a journalist after finishing college and was the editor of the Oregon Statesman in Salem, Oregon. Before he left Iowa for Oregon in 1928, the Waterloo Courier, for whom he had been a reporter, identified him as an important part of the Myrle Sizer case:

"While attending Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, Webb was prominent in efforts to solve the mystery of the disappearance of Merle Sizer, college coed. An anonymous letter threatened Webb's life unless he desisted." (1 Sep 1928, p2)

Binford Arney became a lawyer and moved to Texas, where he died in 1984. Both Webb and Arney were ten years younger than Sizer

Another article, published in the Des Moines Register on 5 Nov 1927, identified another Cornell student as a person of significant interest:

"Another Cornell student, George W Penn, then a senior at Cornell, admitted to state agents that Miss Sizer was in a delicate condition and that he had offered to marry her, maintaining, however, that he was not responsible for her condition. His confession led to a search of hospitals throughout the Midwest, but his statements were never verified."

Although one might suspect Webb of nefarious deeds, he and his father led rescue parties and started the fund for a reward for information leading to Sizer's whereabouts, according to a 17 Jan 1927 article in the Davenport Daily Times.

One final detail: A doctor, Jesse J Cook and his wife were arrested in 1928 in connection with the death by sepsis of a young woman, Eva Thompson. The sepsis was the result of an abortion and officials investigating her death believed that Dr. Cook might have had information about Myrle Sizer. During their questions, they learned that Cook was in Cedar Rapids the night that Merle Sizer went missing at Marion. Marion is about 5 miles outside of Cedar Rapids. The doctor later went to Wheatland, where he formerly practiced. This is significant because several days after her disappearance, Sizer was reportedly seen in Wheatland. Wheatland is also on U.S. 30, due west of Cedar Rapids and en route to Chicago. 7 Jan 1928, Davenport Daily Times, p1
luluhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03130943854046834929noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5271506340286790281.post-84814396668106963632018-03-21T00:29:17.156-05:002018-03-21T00:29:17.156-05:00Would it be possible to try and track down Mary Do...Would it be possible to try and track down Mary Doefour's child?
